To take the Eucharist to the sick is one of the richest ways of showing that they are considered to be full members of the community. That was originally the main reason for part of the Eucharist being preserved at the end of the Mass.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament. It teaches that, as a sacrament of healing, it is a continuation of the healing ministry of Jesus through the compassionate action of the Church. The sacrament celebrates Jesus’ healing power as a continuing reality in our lives. For the first twelve centuries of the Church’s history, the emphasis on this sacrament was healing – of body, as much as soul.

“The Sacrament of Anointing is the sacrament of spiritual comfort for the gravely ill. It is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Therefore as soon as anyone begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the appropriate time for him or her to receive this sacrament has certainly arrived”. (Vatican II)

Through this sacrament, the Church stands by the elderly and the ill with genuine concern, sharing in the healing ministry of Jesus. The person who is now sick has usually spent years serving others, now the Church is there to comfort and support them. The presence and participation of the community in this sacrament are signs of the continuing love and presence of Christ.

When a Catholic is seriously ill, the family and friends gather together to pray in a special way. They invite their priest/deacon to join them in their prayers. A priest very often hears the Confession of the sick person, anoints them with oil and offers them the Eucharist (Viaticum). Where a priest/deacon is not available, a Eucharistic Minister may bring the Eucharist to the sick.

If you wish to receive the Sacrament of the Sick whilst in hospital you can ask any member of staff to request a visit from the hospital chaplain.

If you wish to receive the Sacrament of the Sick at home, you can call the Parish Emergency Number on 07596899031.
