At Confirmation, the family gathers together, just like at Baptism, to celebrate the child becoming an adult Christian. Confirmation is a celebration for the family and the parish. The person being confirmed decides to try their best to bring about in their own life God’s kingdom of peace, love, justice and truth. At Confirmation, the Risen Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit to help us work for God’s kingdom on earth. In the celebration of the Sacrament, the Bishop or Priest using the oil of Chrism signs a cross on the head of the person being confirmed saying: “Be sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit”.
The Holy Spirit is with the person being confirmed in a special way. The Holy Spirit will always be with them and will help them to use their gifts and will inspire them to work with others for the good of the community. Others can see the effects of the Holy Spirit when we do good and when we help build the kingdom of God. Confirmation is both a public and personal act of commitment to Christ and to the community.
The Church teaches that Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation into the Christian community, and it confirms what occurred in Baptism and is completed through the Eucharist. Its focal point is the laying on of hands and the anointing by the Bishop/Priest as he prays that God may send his Holy Spirit on the one being confirmed. The confirmed Catholic is called to a life of Christian responsibility, and he/she is challenged to stand for justice, peace, honesty and reverence.
The Gifts of the Spirit given at Confirmation are Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Courage, Right Judgment, Reverence & Wonder and awe in God’s presence.
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated in the Parish of Armagh on the weekend of Saturday 27th/Sunday 28th May 2023. There will be two celebrations in St Patrick’s Cathedral and the dates and times for each of the Services are as follows.
18th Feb – 7pm – St Patrick’s PS, St Malachy’s PS and Saint’s & Scholars PS in St Patrick’s Cathedral
20th Feb – 7pm – Christian Brother’s PS, Mt. St. Catherine’s, Our Lady’s PS and Armstrong PS in St Patrick’s Cathedral
Saturday 7th June – 2pm – St Patrick’s PS, St Malachy’s PS and Saint’s & Scholars PS in St Patrick’s Cathedral
Sunday 8th June – 2pm – Christian Brother’s PS, Mt. St. Catherine’s, Our Lady’s PS and Armstrong PS in St Patrick’s Cathedral
